I watch these commercials for credit resolution services/credit counselors and they make it seem like these poor innocent people suddenly found themselves tens of thousands of dollars in debt with no idea how it happened, with a subtle hint that somehow it is not at all their fault.
Sounds like this applicant has been watching those commercials.
And never forget the guy, this was back in the 70s or 80s, who told an FBI source pretending to be a Soviet agent that he wanted to sell some secrets to clear up debts… so he could then get a higher level of clearance and make some real money selling secrets.
