Hello! I’m hoping to get perspective on how my marijuana history might realistically be viewed under Guideline H, particularly regarding gaps and recency.
I’m 24 and about two years out of college. I have received an offer for a role that would require me to obtain a Secret or TS clearance, and I would likely submit my SF-86 around March 2026. I understand no one can provide probabilities. What I’m trying to determine is whether this type of history generally falls within the range of cases that are commonly mitigated, so I can make an informed decision about accepting the role.
Here is my timeline as accurately as I can reconstruct it:
- First use: October 2018 in high school.
- Late 2018: brief experimentation a few times per month in social settings when offered. (estimated 5 times)
- 2019: occasional social use, estimated about 10-15 total times.
- No use from late 2019 through summer 2021.
- Summer 2021: one instance with a family member.
- Fall 2021: one instance in a social setting.
- No use from late 2021 until August 2023. (potential for one more time, but no genuine recollection)
- August 2023: one isolated social instance.
- January 2024: one isolated instance during a family vacation.
- No use since January 2024.
I never purchased directly from a dealer. A few times years ago I gave money to friends who obtained it.
My main questions are:
- How are long abstinence gaps followed by isolated one-time uses typically viewed?
- Does a little over two years since last use generally help demonstrate stability?
- How can I help account for lapses in memory when reporting on the SF-86? (I want to be as honest as I can)
I also want to clarify that my decision to permanently abstain is not based only on clearance requirements. Over the past several years my views have changed significantly due to personal growth, health priorities, discipline, and faith. I have a clear and genuine conviction that I will not use marijuana again regardless of legality or employment considerations.
I hold no judgment toward others’ personal choices. I’m simply trying to understand how this fact pattern is typically evaluated so I can decide whether to accept a role that requires clearance eligibility.
