Federal position or contracting position - opinions?

Looking for some feedback or differing points of views. At this point, the federal work environment is pretty unstable, and who knows when it’ll go back to normal. Given the situation, and if going from contracting to possibly a federal position - would you remain as a contractor? Or would you take the federal job?

For context - both are at the same facility and in-person so the commute is the same. Contracting is shift work/panamas and 90k, and the federal job is a 9-5 day job and 63k.

I feel like a year ago I would have jumped at the federal position because of the securities it would have provided - now not so much. Just wondering if y’all had any opinions on it?

I’m afraid this is the new normal, at least for the next few years. But I wouldn’t say it is “unstable.” It is still much more stable than a lot of careers. You’re just seeing a big shift in the environment.

The benefits to a federal career accrue slowly over the long term, and I think today’s culture is not interested in long term anything. However, the old unspoken agreement of “we won’t pay you quite as much, but in exchange for giving up that money we’ll give you better stability and good benefits” is under attack.

I felt this in my bones and newly fragile knees.

My two cents,

Easily would still take a CIV position, though I’m admittedly less inclined to be shook over today’s barrage of news or any administration’s attempts at change(s).

Depends on the field. Intel/cyber? probably. HR at some non DoD or non law enforcement agency, I probably would not

I did 19 contracting was a 14 equivalent with 10 departments and 370 fte’s. Stepped down to a GS 13, now NH-03. Was a bit unsatisfying scoping authority down a level…but gained “I speak for the government “status. Been 5 years. Currently stuck as my term expires 25 October and it is unknown if the final year’ extension will cross the finish line. It was at the approval level a week prior to furlough.

I guess I’m on the fence. I seen bennies on both sides. But hearing talk of not paying us backpay…yeah feeling that “not stable” If offered 20k higher for same COLA? I’d go contract again.
