Moderate-Risk Public Trust — Seeking Realistic Feedback

I was recently selected for a federal IT position requiring a Moderate-Risk Public Trust investigation.

I have honorable military service and previously held a Secret clearance, which became inactive in 2023—before the substance use described below. I have no arrests, convictions, DUIs, or substance-related employment problems.

My primary concern is recent ecstasy and cannabis use. I voluntarily enrolled myself in treatment; it was not required by a court or employer. I completed the program through the VA and continue participating in aftercare and recovery support.

I also have some minor financial matters that I am actively resolving. My late tax returns have been filed, payments have started, and older debts are either paid or under payment arrangements.

General timeline:

  • 2023: Previous Secret clearance became inactive.
  • Summer 2025: Substance use ended and I voluntarily sought treatment.
  • Late summer 2026: Selected for a federal position.
  • Shortly afterward: Public Trust process initiated.
  • Present: Continuing recovery support and awaiting the suitability determination.

I intend to disclose everything honestly and provide documentation if requested. Has anyone received a favorable Moderate-Risk Public Trust determination with similarly recent ecstasy and cannabis use after voluntarily seeking treatment? How much weight is generally given to rehabilitation, honesty, and the absence of legal or employment problems?
