Roommate friend refuses to be interviewed

Hello,

I applied for and got an internship for a DoD contracting company. For this position, I am required to get a secret clearance. The problem is that I smoked marijuana with a roommate 3 months before accepting this position about 5 times spanning from September to August of 2024.

It was completely experimental and I have since taken steps to mitigate my risk of exposure to marijuana.

For one, I am a college student and am actually terminating a housing lease for the Fall2025 semester to mitigate my exposure to my roommates frequent weed usage and plan to exclusively commute to school.

I recognize that it was my own choice to partake in marijuana usage and I plan to disclose everything in the SF86. However, when asking if my roommate was willing to be interviewed or put on any section of my SF86; he said no and will flat out reject any attempt to be interviewed. I will disclose everything to the interviewer so I’m worried that they will ask who I got the marijuana from of which I’ll say my roommate and then they will go interview my roommate which he will then deny an interview. I’m afraid this could negatively hurt my chances of getting a secret clearance. Is there anything I can do?

What is more important is that you disclose everything and show that you are not currently participating in tge activity, or associating with anyone that is. You will be asked who knows, but that does not mean that they will be interviewed, and if they are, there is a very good possibility that your friend (s) will not say anything.

Based on the type of investigation and clearance you’re being considered for, no one will be interviewed concerning your drug use.
