Call center investigators

Well, CACI is making it official, opening a call center to complete investigations. There are so many concerns with this, and I don’t understand how anyone thinks this is a good idea. There are enough times when sources do not want to talk to us in this new remote environment because they think we are scamming, now they really won’t talk to an investigator when they can hear dozens of other voices in the background. Not to mention, you can keep a subject interview private in a call center. I doubt each investigator will have an office because they will not be cost effective for CACI. This is not how the “safety of our nation” is ensured, despite what CACI believes and promotes in the job posting.

Is this a model for centers across the country? How will in person attempts be handled? Maybe by the part-time on call investigators that CACI just posted a job.

Management will love this. They can constantly monitor what you are doing.

It will work great until someone goes Allahu Akbar, but at least they can blame I.T.

Oh wow! Luckily it’s only in Tampa for now.

I’m wondering what the issue is, because this job has always been remote and we’ve done just fine. Wonder what’s leading to the change & if they’ll keep the onsite stuff with the W2’s. Not sure how this would work on the 1099 side

For now, it’s only in Tampa. I would imagine that this is test to see if it is successful, of course success is subjective. I’m sure the issue is CACI is not making as much money as they were two years ago and shareholders aren’t happy. CACI has been slowly keeping their investigators glued to their desks for the past two years and the mandated e-notes was the final piece. The more cases they transmit, the more cases they are assigned from DCSA, the more money they make. I suspect they’ll keep a handful of 1099s and on call p/t FIs for the in person attempts.

Management will absolutely love this. I can’t even imagine how stressful it will be working there. As if this job doesn’t need enough stress.

Quick reply before I get back to the never-ending telethon…This is the future of the industry. CACI and Peraton will set up a call center (only need one, in their minds, to cover Maine to Guam). It is happening already with very little being scheduled to the field. How long will it take to get implemented fully - can’t predict that, but it is coming.

I have heard that the new DCSA solicitation for the new contract has a requirement that whoever ends up winning the contracts in 2026 will stand up and maintain call centers such as this one that is described.

Did you hear what the reason was for DCSA’s interest in it? I get why CACI/Peraton would want it (micro managing FIs, profit), but I don’t get why DCSA would care where the FIs are conducting the work.

Are we really conducting background “investigations” when everything is done by phone and Subject gives all the leads? Isn’t this 100% the subject controlling the entire investigation, other than records? I wonder how far a person could get in the process if they made everything up? Back in the day we were trained to NEVER let subject control the investigation. This is getting ridiculous.

I’ve told people (not “work” people) I’m a glorified survey taker.

I agree, most investigators are not investigating. I see so much written off and/or scheduled for in person because an investigator doesn’t think outside of what is listed or what the subject tells them to find coverage. Sources don’t even pay attention to us on the phone. Nothing is taking seriously anymore. Imagine being a source or subject and getting a call from an investigator at call center and hearing 30, 50, 100 other investigators in the background talking.

It’s security theater

This guy’s investigation was presumably conducted “in person” and was apparently done horribly. Perhaps this is the case that will grab enough attention to swing us back into real “in person” investigations.

Very doubtful that DCSA and the U.S. government will revert back to in person interviews.

For anyone who remembers the aftermath of the 2013 Navy yard shooting, there was definitely a push to keep your “telephone source interview” numbers down after the bad publicity on the things that were missed on the shooters background investigation. Not that it would have made a difference, but sometimes it’s just a knee jerk reaction to a bad event.

It would have to take something on a very large scale to go back to in person field work and it would have to be tied to interviews being done by phone or VTC that if done in person would have prevented such threat or breach. There would have to be a direct correlation. And that direct correlation would almost be impossible to pinpoint or decipher.

I have heard October 1 2026 DCSA is going back to in person interviews.

Who and what are your sources?

I was told this by a very reliable source who got it from fed staff. The source was a former manager and very connected. Evidently DCSA is not happy with what they are getting. Telephone would only be in extreme circumstances. I know it is second hand but it would explain all the hiring of full time investigators that is going on right now.

That would be great if your sources are accurate. I would love to work local cases in my area.
