I am looking at a new position within my company, but it will require me to obtain a security clearance. I am a former Marine and had a clearance at that time. I have been out for several years now, but have also gotten in to some credit card debt. I recently enrolled in a debt relief program to help manage the debt. Would being enrolled in this program disqualify me from being able to get a security clearance?
Not disqualify, no. It would need to be looked at, but if you are managing your debt and have a repayment plan that you have been up-to-date with, you should be able to get cleared.
It would be much worse if you weren’t enrolled in that program.
You don’t need to be enrolled in any debt relief program. As long as you are living within your means, the credit card debt that is serviced with no lates won’t be an issue at all.
