I received a lock In Letter last week from the IRS. Do I need to report it to security by chance?
For more background, I currently have a TS clearance and wanting to know if I need to report and do an SF-86c form to report me receiving this. Let me know …
I never heard of this so I consulted my accountant… Google and Google CPA. Apparently this is a directive to adjust your tax withholding.
I can’t tell if this is really an adverse action (based on my extensive research ) but it can’t hurt to report it. I don’t think this is an SF-86c though. I echo @clearedrob on this one.
Follow other’s recommendations, and something you may wish to consider is submitting a new updated W-4 to your employer with a higher amount of withholding (even $1) than in the IRS letter and your employer must honor.
You may also petition the IRS (Withholding Compliance unit) with a letter stating why the decrease in federal withholding tax is relevant to you. You would need to show economic harm to yourself or family, “reseaonable cause” (expensive out of pocket meds needed for child, for example), etc. Submit via certified mail return receipt requested or overnight mail for proof of delivery to the address on the letter.
Better you control the situation then the IRS.
Once in effect the lock stays in place unless you petition the IRS. Could this be a further issue down the road with CE ?
You may request the lock be removed after three years of filing and payment compliance in all areas.
