A friend of mine is up for renewal on his SF86 and is trying to decide if he should move forward with the renewal or just walk away from his clearance all together. He was let go from 2 jobs a few years ago within a span of 2 years. One was due to a security incident (improper file storage of CUI on personal device) and another was due to a company finding out that he held a 2nd job (both were full time) without approval (over employment). He had held multiple jobs a few times in the past but never got approval for it. He is currently only working 1 job. There are no other known issues. What should he do?
Neither of these incidents alone is too serious, but the two together may be perceived as forming a pattern. Has he (whoever “he” is) had steady employment since then? Seems like neither of these incidents raised any red flags preventing the third company from picking up the clearance.
Yes, he was able to land another cleared contract after the 2nd job loss.
How long has it been? Did the gov find he was double-dipping hours (charging gov agency for hours he worked on something else)? As long as he’s not been charged with time-sheet fraud, and he’s not still working multiple jobs without prior approval, he should be able to mitigate most of that stuff.
This occurred about 3 years ago. He was juggling contract work between 2020-2023. He has not been charged with anything. He is concerned that if he reports this that he there could be some retroactive action taken against him. He has been clean since late 2024.
I wonder if he can claim that he did not report it because he was terminated and besides the company should have reported it…? I mean, he should report it now, but he can tell the investigator that’s why he did not bring it up before.
