Hi all, just not sure what to do if at all, or if it was a psych-you-out-bit. Just had my BI for a SF 86 and the interviewer told me he’d been doing this for 25 years post-retirement from DEA, etc, so older fellow. But outside of questions about fixing my e-App or about me, he said some strange things that normally would be really reportable, like a comment on my age and that my biological clock is ticking, that I don’t ’look too oriental’, that he’s ’checking with the cops to see if I’m a good girl’, and some comments about other things that revealed his political opinion on states, the election process, etc. I guess I’m just wondering if being off-putting like that is part of the bit or worth finding someone to report it to? First time trying to get a security clearance. If it’s part of the bit then it’s fine, but…. Any thoughts welcome.
Any questions or comments outside of the security clearance process towards a Subject or source are inappropriate. In the 15+ years I have been doing this job, I have never commented on a Subject’s age or how they look. I would report what he said. He may think it was funny or cute but it was totally unprofessional and he should not be an investigator.
Some investigators like to use a lighter touch to the subject interview. I do as well. But, there should never be any comments made about age, gender, or appearance. And, an investigator should never make any statements that appear to be an opinion on anything political. I have had subjects that have expressed their political opinions, but I have never responded. Based on the fact he told you how long he has been doing the job, that is how he is and doesn’t see any issues with what he says. But, background investigators shouldn’t be expressing their opinions or making comments about a subject.
