Former Investigator, Need Some Advice From Current Investigators..

I worked as an Investigator for a large contractor for about 10 years right out of college. It was a great a choice at that time, I enjoyed it.

Became a stay at home mom, started a small business, but it has stayed small and due to other personal reasons I wanted to get back into Investigations, It felt like a safe choice.

I got the offer, signed all contracts, got the clearance, had my training date set. I still wasn’t sure I was making the right choice. But, was grateful for the job offer after all these years.

2 weeks ago got an email out of the blue saying the company was no longer engaging in my area and training was cancelled (this was a 1099 position).

Does this happen a lot? Since I’ve been away for so long, I don’t know how stable this career is and is it worth it to reapply to other companies or direct with DCSA? I like the contractor idea and don’t really need the benefits right now. I’m not sure what to do.

I’m certain are other sub contractors hiring 1099s and putting them through training. If you were working with CACI (they don’t hire 1099s) or one of their subs, ask about others. Same with Peraton, who I think is hiring 1099s.

Good luck.

I feel like that is a little strange as you would be a 1099 and if there was no work, they don’t have to pay you anything…but without knowing your area, it is kinda a crystal ball question. It could be that they have too many investigators in that area already. But, so much has moved to virtual that it is surprising as you can take work from other areas. Maybe the company you applied to is downgrading there footprint in the industry…who knows…But, as others have already said, there are too many sub-contract companies that surely another company would pick you up…especially now that your clearance is done.
