References not being asked for extra references

I’m currently in Tech school for the Air Force and my job requires a TS/SCI and polygraph. I had my interview before basic training and a second one during. I recently was talking to one of the people I put down as a reference and the interview came up in conversation so I asked who they gave as an additional reference and they said they were never asked and hadn’t heard abt any mutual friends getting interviewed. So I asked a couple other more recent references and one from high school (only from abt 3 years ago) and they all said they were never asked for additional references and the high school contact wasn’t interviewed at all. I didn’t have a whole lot of references probably around 12 and not a lot of them are very recent. I’ve done some research and this seems very out of the normal especially for a TS SCI It’s already in adjudication so I’m just very confused. Is this normal, good, bad? If anyone who’s more knowledgeable could give some insight I would be so grateful. ( forgot to mention that I didn’t have the best financial history but I didn’t try to hide anything).

That is very normal.

Investigators will almost always try to develop their own sources, in part to make sure they are not limited to the names you provided who may all be hand-picked to give glowing reports

So they may have spoken to people you are no longer in contact with.
