If I’m not mistaken, it’s the leading cause of denials, by far.
Yes, financial concerns continue to be the leading reason for denials. But debt is not necessarily an issue.
The biggest problem is unpaid delinquent debt, debt in collection, that sort of thing. If you have a great deal of debt but you are making payments, keeping up to date, not letting it snowball, that is less of a problem.
Some people have reported getting tripped up by not adequately disclosing debt that had been ‘written off’ or ‘forgiven,’ thinking it was no longer an issue. Also in some cases these forgiven debts are considered income and must be reported on tax returns; if people fail to do so that can be another problem.
