Are You Experiencing Security Clearance Processing Delays?

Updated: Newbie here:

I guess my process has been fairly quick:

  • Submitted SF86 - Nov, 2017
  • OPM Investigation Open - Dec, 2017
  • Interview (One on One w/ Investigator) - Feb, 2018
  • Granted Interim TS - March, 2018
  • Last Subject Reference Interview - June, 2018
  • TS Clearance Granted - August, 2018
    ** TS/SCI Granted - June, 2019**

Interim TS, don’t see that too often.

Any update on your current situation?

Absolutely nothing. I’ve convinced myself it’ll be at least a year before I hear anything.

I was told by my FSO that my status is “adjudication pending” which basically means that my investigation is complete and my file is just waiting to make it to an adjudicator’s desk.

My timeline is the following:
May 2019 - e-Qip submitted
June 2019 - Interim clearance denied
July 2019 - BI Interview and completion of BI investigation

I’ve been in adjudication since July and am just playing the waiting game for about four months now.

Do you have an idea as to why you may have been denied an interim? I know, sometimes, it does not have anything to do with the person, but rather the position, but did you have any marks on your record?

Yeah, I was terminated from a job back in December 2017, although I was completely honest about it on the SF-86 and my investigator. I also have some CC debt, but am not delinquent on any payments.

I’ve read about people having worse marks on their record and they still received interim clearance. It might have had something to do with the position. I wouldn’t necessarily worry about those two things. I’m sure you’ll get your clearance soon. I have read as soon as it’s turned in to the adjudicator, it doesn’t take too long from there.

Well, I’ve also been diagnosed with alcohol abuse disorder, but have been sober for over 13 months. I quit drinking because it was contributing to my anxiety/depression, which was the sole reason I sought formal counseling. I don’t have any legal problems from alcohol use so that’s a plus. However, my anxiety/depression has significantly improved through treatment and abstaining from alcohol.

I’m so sorry to hear that; however, I’m glad you are better now. I’m not an expert, but I still believe you can receive final clearance. I found this public website regarding appeals and why they were denied clearance. After reading this information, it made me feel better about my own situation.

Thanks PandoraPost! I’ve perused these before and most of the denials are for financial considerations. Those that were denied for alcohol-related issues are for applicants that had legal issues with alcohol, such as DWIs, PIs, etc. Therefore, seeing how I’ve had no legal issues with alcohol, it makes my chances of getting cleared much greater.

No problem! Also, the fact that you’ve mitigated your issues, works in your favor!

May 2019 - Submitted e-qip , fingerprints, credit pulled

2 weeks later - Interim denied

end of July - DoD investigator in person interview. Went well.

Haven’t heard anything since then, my case is still eligibility pending/open and hasn’t entered adjudication yet. I get monthly emails that my application is still pending.

I’m starting to get anxious about my secret clearance status I was hoping to start working in June.

You get monthly emails? Are those automatically generated emails or from your security officer?

TS/SCI Initial Investigation
August 2019 - Accepted job offer

September 2019 - Submitted SF-86 to FSO

October 2019 - Resubmitted SF-86 to FSO after fixing errors

I have heard nothing since. I’m in the DC area and I think people might have implied it’s a very clogged area with a lot of work because its DC. I haven’t heard anything for ~75 days now since I’ve submitted and I’ve read online that the DCSA average is now down to 160ish days from submission to adjudication.

from the company sponsoring my clearance letting me know that my case is still open. I get it every 30 days.

I am starting to get worried since I haven’t gotten any status updates. I am hoping to start working in a few months, should I call/email my DoD interviewer, i still have their business card. Should I contact my senator. Any advice please.

If your investigator needed anything he would contact you. If he doesn’t need anything, there’s nothing that he can tell you.

Others here sometimes have other advice about getting the current status of the process. My view, for the most part, is to let if play out. You’re about six months out from your interview. It’s not that unusual.

However, I have no problem with the idea of contacting your representative and senators. In my experience, congressional reps are more responsive. Neither of my senators even bothered to get back to me.

They can’t speed things up but they can get you a status. I think it’s also good that they hear how slow paced this process is. They are the ones with the power to legislate changes.

Got it thank you, I think I will wait another month then look into contacting reps/senator.

Application - June 2016
Interview and CJO - September 2016
Security Phone Interview - February 2017
Medical and Poly - April 2017
Meeting with BI - August 2017
Periodic updates to know I’m still processing through 2018 and 2019
December 2019 - Contacted to fill out SF86-C
January - Contacted to fill out FNC forms by DCSA; told a DCSA agent will be contacting me shortly

Totally insane. Would not do this all over again. Fingers crossed this doesn’t require another trip down for another poly.
