Almost weekly I get an inquiry from someone who was contacted by a background investigator via text or email for an interview. They usually ask me if it is legit or if it is some phishing attempt to get personal information. I tell them “Yes, investigators conducting personnel security or suitability background investigations may call,…

Every agency has different protocols regarding various forms of communication. I am issued credentials by different agencies and they all have different communication tools of approval.

I remember one time an investigator wanted to meet me at a pizza place for a reference interview. I said no, I work at a cleared defense contractor and they will be happy to set us up with a conference room.

But what if I didnt work at such a place? Would they conduct an interview at a pizza place with a bunch of people sitting around?

If people would set up their voicemail so that a message could be left, that would be very helpful to an investigator. Or, just checking a voice mail would be helpful as well. Text messages are not my preferred way to contact sources or subjects, but it seems to be the only way to get someone’s attention. I understand that spam calls are out of control. But, if a subject knows that they need to be interviewed for a clearance, answer the phone or check your email.
