How close to an internship is a clearance able to be granted?

Generally speaking, is there a guesstimate for the cut off date that the clearance needs to be done by? I realize it varies by agency but if anyone has experience to share I’d appreciate.

Fake Example: Summer Internship starts on May 1st, therefore clearance has to be approved by March 31st

Would they be able to bring you on with an interim clearance or they require full adjudication? That can make a difference in the timeline.

I literally did the Subject interview in summer 2023 the day before the Subject’s internship ended. The large well known defense contractor tells candidates to list being employed by them at the future job location, then tells us there is no record of employment causing a subject interview being scheduled to the wrong state. Atleast they will have their clearance for the following summer/graduation.

The folks at the requesting agency are the only folks that can tell you if there is a cut off requirement or if you can intern with an interim clearance.

I’ve interviewed Subjects after they already completed their internship so I’d say it definitely depends on the agency and position.
