The problem is that there are too many investigators. It was not an issue as long as there was a backlog of cases. The backlog is gone and the amount of new work being generated is not going to be enough to support the number of investigators who are currently working for the three main contractors. Perspecta and SCIS have already let people go and CACI will probably be next.
I’m still waiting for my creds. Its been a month since I completed the training. They did say it takes a while ( a month or so) to receive creds from agency.
New member here, retiring military and thinking about becoming and CI. Couple people in my TAP (transition program for military) were also interested, is this work slowdown due to a process change or just because a previous backlog cleared up. Really excited about this line of work (big refreshing change after 20 years in military). Hope things turn around for the better.

If you are solely looking for something part time as an IC, if you’re willing to work multiple contracts and you work in an area flush with work, you may be okay. Key word is “may.” And this is somewhat optimistic on my part.
But this entire industry is going through a major shakeup. With the recent NDAA, we can see a continuation of the move away from boots on the ground investigators, in favor of Trusted Workforce 2.0 and Continuous Evaluation. Reinvestigation case types are (ideally) set to decline by 90%.
I do not think that this is a long term stable career anymore. I can’t see into the future and I’m not privy to any industry secrets, but between the writing on the wall and what my gut tells me, this is not a viable career path for stable full time employment anymore.
Source: I’ve been in this line of work since USIS and I am current Team Leader with one of the vendors.
Replying to my previous post: received my CBP creds from Omni last week. Waiting to start.
Thank you for the insight. I am looking to retire (from military) and move west of Seattle. There are a few military instillations in that general area, so I hope there will be business. I hope this all turns around for the better! thanks for the reply
Did you get the training on the system yet
Only completed the required test out course. They did tell me that there would be an online orientation soon. I’m assuming that is going to be the training on how to navigate their system.
Hello I was hired by Omni 6 months ago and finally started right before Christmas. I have had work from them but they do not do DSCA work as you know. That is the only thing that has kept my head above water. Perspecta sure hasn’t given me more than one case very two weeks that’s for sure .
I am military retiring in next year or so, looking into CI work in Seattle area, seem to still be work up there? thanks
So far so good. Contracting with Perspecta and there is some slow down but enough work for (very) part-time. If you are anticipating FT or even reliable consistent work then definitely no. Especially with OPM /DCSA/DOD changes.
I would be fine with part-time, even slow. It will be supplemental in retirement. I am a fairy new member but if I can figure out how, I will PM you if your willing to give me some advice on the side, thank you very much.
Rob
Getting in to the industry requires a vendor to train you. Currently no one is offering training courses. There are thousands of credentialed investigators without jobs. The minute a vendor puts up an announcement, those jobs are swooped up! Your best bet is to go the federal route and leave investigations alone
