Hello everyone,
I’ve spent a bit of time reading through posts here regarding security clearances, dual citizenship, and USAF pilot applicants, but I still feel that my case is somewhat complicated, so I’d really appreciate honest input from people familiar with the process.
I was born in Mexico, but I am a U.S. citizen through my father, who is fully American. My mother is Mexican and only became a naturalized U.S. citizen within the last couple of years. My father has not really been involved in my life, however.
I have lived in Mexico for roughly 15 years, or about two-thirds of my life, although I have also spent significant time living in the United States (middle school and high school.) Despite currently living in Mexico while finishing my bachelor degree, I fully intend to live permanently in the United States in the future, regardless of whether I ultimately succeed in the military path or not.
As I mentioned, I’m currently completing a bachelors degree in Mexico, and my long-term goal is to apply for a pilot slot through either the Air National Guard or Air Force Reserve via OTS, after validation of my degree.
My immediate family still resides mostly in Mexico, although my only sibling (my older sister) currently lives and works in the United States since she also has dual citizenship. I am also planning to marry my girlfriend, who is a Mexican citizen. If things go according to plan, I would eventually sponsor her for U.S. residency.
One major concern I have is related to the Mexican “cartilla militar” requirement. In order to complete my degree process and receive my final professional title (which is a requirement for OTS in the USAF), my university requires me to complete the Mexican military service which is how you obtain the “cartilla militar”. From my understanding, this is generally a legal/administrative requirement for the majority of Mexican males rather than an active military service in the way people in the U.S. may think of it, but I’m worried about how this could be viewed during a U.S. security clearance investigation.
Some additional context:
-
I have never been involved in criminal activity or illegal organizations in either country.
-
I have never used illegal drugs.
-
I have no ties to the Mexican government, intelligence services, or political organizations.
-
I understand that foreign influence and foreign preference are major considerations for pilot applicants requiring a Top Secret clearance.
-
I strongly identify with the United States and intend to build my future there permanently.
-
I would be willing to renounce Mexican citizenship in the future if it became necessary for military service or clearance purposes.
-
I speak fluent English and Spanish.
-
I have never voted in any Mexican election.
-
I registered myself in the Selective Service a couple years ago.
My concern is whether the combination of:
-
Dual citizenship,
-
Significant family ties in Mexico,
-
A future foreign spouse,
-
Having lived abroad for most of my life,
-
And potentially needing to complete the Mexican cartilla militar process for academic reasons
could realistically become major obstacles for obtaining a Top Secret clearance and pursuing military aviation.
I know every case is individual, but I’d really appreciate all candid opinions and tips I can get.
Thank you in advance.
