Thinking about getting back into being a 1099 Investigator after being full time for quite some time now. Looking to see if anyone has any insight to what 1099s are being paid per item these days? And/or what companies are the best now? Assuming it’s changed since I was a 1099 back in 2018.
It really depends on which company you work for. There some vendors or subs under each prime and some pay better than others. Depends also on the contract. I have three I support and honestly I personally feel that I should have made the switch to 1099 sooner. Stay away from any sub under Peraton in my opinion they just don’t pay enough esp since Peraton has their own 1099s who they prioritize for work and pay very little. SCIS is pretty good for DCSA I believe their rates are the highest for DCSA compared to others, this is my main contract. On DHS, ADC was pretty good. Intel contract is ok, not a whole lot of work so doesn’t really matter where you go to be honest. Most vendors don’t even share their rates until you start with them but I’ve had a positive experience since coming on with SCIS. They used to be under CANDA and I heard SCIS decided to leave CANDA and now they are a direct sub of CACI. I haven’t been here very long but I am getting the work I want (making more than I did full time) and signed up for an incentive bonus right now which is pretty great. You have to also factor in the flexibility of 1099 work because to me there is no value you can put on the freedom from constant focus on metrics and production. Thats what drove me to explore 1099 options to begin with. I’m in charge of my schedule now and I decide when I take work and when I take a break. Also I have full control over the type of items I want to work unlike full time where they’re constantly pushing items you don’t enjoy on you. Best of luck to you in your research.
