IRS MBI Clearance process and Current Employer

Had a quick question, I’m doing the process for IRS MBS investigation which is already going to take probably +6 months. The job is contingent on completing this process successfully. So my question is when they get my current employer info and reach out to them this will tip my employer off that I’m potentially leaving, but knowing it will take months for the investigation to complete what if they let me go over knowing I’m potentially leaving? Then I’m jobless waiting on the investigation to finish and of course have to seek new employment during the wait time. Seems like I may need to decline this opportunity if I have to take on all those risks. It’d be different if I was at least working with them while the process was on-going.

I don’t know how the investigators handle that but my experience has been the HR dept has always asked me if it was ok to contact my current employer.

They are able to get my general clearance info on their own from EPAS and scattered castles.

Investigators don’t ask that.

I figured that but didn’t want to speak out of turn. I’m not an investigator.

Was this process involving the eQip (SF85P) form? On there they ask for your supervisors info and I figure they call them. I haven’t had someone from HR call me up and ask this before, but I do have a Secret clearance already, the IRS just likes to do their own process.

It’s been on every job app I’ve ever filled out. It asks for current/most recent supervisor then asks if it’s ok to contact them. I’ve also had recruiters ask me during the recruiting process before I even fill anything out. Of course, that’s different from the eqip.

But again, the BI investigators work differently. You can always ask…

Your employer will figure out you’re leaving during the investigation. Depending on the investigation type they will either get an inquiry via mail or contacted by an investigator. We do not ask for permission to contact your employer, you granted permission by signing and submitting your security questionnaire. I have actually interviewed a supervisor before who was unaware the Subject had applied to other jobs so essentially I gave the employer notice instead of the subject doing so… that interview was a little awkward lol

hmm I see, may have to withdraw then because the process can take months even after talking to the employer. Can’t risk my income to wait on the lengthy process to complete. Not all employers are understanding even if you notify them.

FWIW, not many employers will take any sort of negative action when finding out you’re looking for another job. That kind of action comes with risks. Most will reach out to you to find out why you’re thinking of leaving and try to work something out to keep you.

Of course, there absolutely are some who will fire or penalize you. If your employer is one of these, maybe honestly ask yourself if you really want to work for them?

I never said there would be negative action lol, I just said the employer would know.
